Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen avenged their Olympic Men’s Doubles gold-medal defeat to Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng of China this afternoon in the CR Land BWF World Superseries Finals.
The Danes (featured image) took the last Group A match 14-21 21-12 21-14 to stay alive in the tournament at Shenzhen Bay Sports Center. Three pairs – the other being Malaysia – each ended with two wins and a loss. Two will advance to tomorrow’s semi-finals. In Men’s Doubles Group B, second seeds Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa of Japan battled past the other Chinese duo, Hong Wei/Shen Ye, in a match stretching past an hour, 22-20 12-21 21-18.
Despite these disappointments, home fans had much to celebrate. Men’s Singles favourite Chen Long survived a mild scare from Kenichi Tago (Japan) in Group B, 21-15 14-21 21-15, while in Women’s Singles, top seed Li Xuerui and third seed Wang Shixian posted contrasting victories. Li took half hour to dismiss Sung Ji Hyun (Korea) 21-9 21-12, while Wang needed three games to withstand the challenge of Japan’s Eriko Hirose 21-15 8-21 21-15.
