XIX Pan Am Championships 2014 – Day 1: Cordon Through to 3rd Round

Veteran Kevin Cordon moved into the Men’s Singles third round at the XIX Pan Am Badminton Championships 2014 yesterday.

The former champion (featured image), seeded sixth, had no trouble overcoming Mexico’s Antonio Ocegueda, 21-15 21-9 and will face home hope Martin Giuffre next. Giuffre also had it easy against Dominican Republic’s Alberto Raposo, 21-8 21-16.

The other seeds, including defending champion Osleni Guerrero (Mexico), Howard Shu (USA), Brazil’s Alex Yuwan Tjong (below) and Sattawat Pongnairat (USA) progressed into the third round. No.5 seed Bjorn Seguin had one of the harder matches of the day, requiring three games to get past Canada’s Stefan Wojcikiewicz, 15-21 21-19 21-15. Canada’s Andrew D’Souza also needed three games to fight past Mexico’s Lino Munoz, 13-21 21-13 21-12.

In Women’s Singles, Canada’s Bethany So recovered from a close first game loss and eventually coasted against Guatemala’s Beatriz Ramos, 21-23 21-9 21-13, while compatriots Rachel Honderich and Kyleigh O’Donoghue too made the second round. USA’s Crystal Pan and Iris Wang, Mexico’s Mariana Ugalde and Cynthia Gonzalez, Peru’s Luz Maria Zornoza and Jamaica’s Geordine Henry (above) also progressed into the second round.

Most of the Mixed Doubles matches were decided in straight games. The only exception was Jamaica’s Gareth Henry/Geordine Henry versus Canada’s Nyl Yakura/Brittney Tam. The Jamaicans dashed the hope of home fans with a three game win: 13-21 21-14 21-17.

In the only Men’s Doubles match of the day, Dominican Republic’s Nelson Javier/Alberto Raposo prevailed in three games over Federico Diaz/Pablo Macagno, 21-16 16-21 21-14.
