Today is the second annual observance of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace and BWF is pleased to acknowledge this with a badminton pictorial.
In 2013, The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, to celebrate the contribution of sports and physical activity to education, human development, healthy lifestyles and a peaceful world. The inaugural observance of this Day was celebrated on 6 April 2014.
“Sport, as a tool for education, development and peace, can promote cooperation, solidarity, tolerance, understanding, social inclusion and health at the local, national and international levels. Its intrinsic values such as teamwork, fairness, discipline, respect for the opponent and the rules of the game are understood all over the world and can be harnessed in the advancement of solidarity, social cohesion and peaceful coexistence,” notes The United Nations.
This is a philosophy which is in keeping with the Badminton World Federation’s own development thrust, particularly through its schools-based, grassroots programme, Shuttle Time; currently implemented in 86 member associations. Included among these are three “Peace through Badminton” projects in Colombia, Haiti and Timor Leste.
Shuttle Time aims to help teachers and coaches develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to plan and deliver safe and fun badminton lessons to children.
BWF’s Shuttle Time resources are currently available in 15 languages, with more languages in production.
