There will be no replay of the All England Men’s Singles final as both the protagonists crashed out in the second round of the OUE Singapore Open today.
Top seed Chen Long, winner of the All England and the Malaysia Open, was brought down to earth by Hong Kong’s Hu Yun, who chalked up his second successive win over the world No.1. Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen, runner-up in the All England, was felled by a foe who triumphed over him a couple of weeks ago in India.
Chen started strongly but trailed for much of the second game. He did well to catch up from 9-14 to 16-all, but Hu shot past him to level at a game apiece. The third game was closely fought, with Hu finally gaining the advantage in the closing stages: 12-21 21-17 21-18.
Prannoy’s victory was more one-sided than at the India Open. His fast and aggressive style helped him shoot past Jorgensen in the second game after an early lead of 6-0. The Dane could never quite catch up as he went down 21-16 21-8 in 33 minutes.
Other seeds to fall by the wayside included Hong Kong Open champion Son Wan Ho and No.7 seed Hans-Kristian Vittinghus. The Korean’s wretched run of poor form continued with a 21-15 22-20 loss to India’s Parupalli Kashyap. Denmark’s Vittinghus, who made the final of the BWF Destination Dubai World Superseries Finals last year, was edged out by Frenchman Brice Leverdez (featured image) 21-13 19-21 21-18.
