Pan Am continental champion Osleni Guerrero (Cuba) and Guatemalan veteran Kevin Cordon eased into the Pan Am Games 2015 quarter-finals yesterday.
Guerrero eased past Nelson Javier Ozuna (Dominican Republic), 21-9 21-15 and will take on Mexico’s Lino Munoz (featured image), who surprised USA’s Bjorn Seguin 21-18 21-9.
Cordon parried the challenge of young Mexican Luis Garrido 21-13 21-13 to advance to a meeting with Brazil’s Ygor Coelho de Oliveira.
USA’s Sattawat Pongnairat was in a spot of bother against Guatemala’s Heymard Humblers but finished strongly, 21-13 11-21 21-8, to book a quarter-final against Canada’s Andrew D’Souza. Pongnairat’s compatriot Howard Shu (right) too entered the quarter-finals with a 21-12 21-13 win over Cuba’s Bryan Veliz.
Brazil’s Lohaynny Vicente and Fabiana Silva entered the Women’s Singles quarter-finals with straight-games victories.
Lohanynny Vicente overcame Chou Ting Ting (Chile) 21-10 21-10, while Silva was stretched by Mariana Ugalde (Mexico) 21-18 21-16. However, their Brazilian compatriot Luana Vicente was no match for USA’s Iris Wang as she went down 21-8 21-12.
Wang’s teammate Jamie Subandhi joined her in the quarter-finals beating Dominican Republic’s Bermany Polanco Munoz 21-13 21-6; Subandhi faces Mexico’s Haramara Gaitan (below), who fought past Luz Maria Zornoza (Peru) 18-21 21-12 21-17.
Lohaynny Vicente will have a difficult challenge ahead as she faces top seed Michelle Li (Canada) in the quarter-finals.
Sattawat Pongnairat also made the Men’s Doubles in the company of Phillip Chew.
Peru’s Mario Cuba/Martin Del Valle won a difficult encounter over Brazil’s Alex Yuwan Tjong/Ygor Coelho de Oliviera, 22-20 21-17, earning a place against Mexico’s Job Castillo/Lino Munoz. Hugo Arthuso/Daniel Paiola made up for the loss of their Brazilian compatriots with a 21-13 21-17 verdict over Andres Corpancho/Jose Guevara (Peru). Cuba’s Ernesto Reyes/Leodannis Martinez (below) edged past Mexico’s Luis Garrido/Antonio Ocegueda 21-19 11-21 21-19.
Two Canadian pairs ensured their presence in the Women’s Doubles quarter-finals. Alex Bruce/Phyllis Chan (below) beat Chile’s Chou Ting Ting/Camila Macaya 21-11 23-21 to advance into the last-eight against Katherine Winder/Luz Maria Zornoza (Peru). Rachel Honderich/Michelle Li had it easier against Guatemala’s Diana Corleto Soto/Mariana Paiz Quan 21-4 21-8. Honderich/Li take on Mexico’s Haramara Gaitan/Cynthia Gonzalez.
In Mixed Doubles, Jamaica’s Gareth Henry/Katherine Wynter prevailed in a thriller over Dominican Republic’s Nelson Javier Ozuna/Daigenis Saturria, 21-17 17-21 23-21. Their quarter-final opponents will be Alex Yuwan Tjong/Lohaynny Vicente (below).
