Brazil powered past Jamaica and USA to top Group B in the XX Pan American Badminton Championships Team Event today.
The hosts blitzed Jamaica 4-1 before blanking USA 5-0. In the other group, Peru overcame Chile 4-1 but fell by the same margin to Canada.
Brazil’s hardest challenge came in the first game of their opening Mixed Doubles encounter. Alex Tjong/Luana Vicente edged out Anthony Mcnee/Mikaylia Haldane 26-24 before prevailing 21-16 in the second.
Ygor Coelho de Oliveira surged past Dennis Coke 21-7 21-16 in the Men’s Singles to make it 2-0 for Brazil.
Jamaica had a ray of hope of getting back in the tie as Katherine Wynter got a walkover from Paloma
Eduarda Dos Santos. However, Hugo Arthuso/Daniel Paiola (featured image) stamped out any possibility of a fightback in Men’s Doubles, beating Dennis Coke/Anthony Mcnee 21-12 21-16. Brazil wrapped up the tie 4-1 with a win in Women’s Doubles, as Ana Paula Campos/Luana Vicente had it easy over Mikaylia Haldane/Katherine Wynter 21-12 21-17.
Samia Lima replaced Paloma Eduarda for Brazil against USA. After Alex Tjong/Luana Vicente gave Brazil the lead, Ygor Oliveira made it 2-0 past Timothy Lam. Lima made it 3-0 beating Disha Gupta 21-10 21-18. Hugo Arthuso/Daniel Paiola and Samia Lima/Luana Vicente breezed past their opponents, making it 5-0 for Brazil.
Peru had beaten Chile 4-1 but were given a taste of their own medicine by Canada. Jason Ho-Shue opened proceedings for Canada in Men’s Singles, 21-11 21-14 victor over Bruno Barrueto Deza. Stephanie Pakenham prevailed over Camila Miroquesada 21-19 21-9 (Women’s Singles), before Phil Gaumond/Marin Max made it 3-0 for Canada with a quick 21-8 21-9 result over Bruno Barrueto Deza/Diego Subauste Tokumura in Men’s Doubles.
Daniela Macias Brandes/Danica Nishimura Higa gave Peru a consolation win beating Michelle Tong/Josephine Wu 21-17 13-21 21-17 in Women’s Doubles.
