The signing ceremony for the host city of the BWF World Senior Championships 2017 took place last Saturday between the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Badminton Association of India (BAI).
BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer and BAI President Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta (featured image) signed the agreement which will see the coastal city of Kochi in south-western India host BWF’s biggest event; the eighth edition of this tournament.
The BWF World Senior Championships are held every two years. The last edition in Helsingborg (Sweden) saw 1302 players from 49 countries take part. The individual men’s and women’s categories had seven age groups: over 35, over 40, over 45, over 50, over 55, over 60, over 65 and over 70. A total of 1400 matches were played on 14 courts.
The event was supported by BWF accredited/certificated technical officials and Badminton Europe technical officials.
In recent times, an increasing number of former elite players have competed in the BWF World Senior Championships. The last edition saw 1997 Men’s Singles World champion Peter Rasmussen (Denmark) claim the +40 Men’s Singles title. Two-time Men’s Doubles World champion Tony Gunawan (USA) also had a successful tournament, winning the +35 Men’s Doubles title with former Indonesian international Flandy Limpele.
Other players to finish on top of the podium were former Indonesian international Hastomo Arbi (+55 Men’s Singles winner), his compatriot and 1995 World champion Harijanto Arbi, and Olympic medallist Tri Kusharjanto, who combined in the +40 Men’s Doubles to win the title.
