Egypt beat South Africa 3-1 to emerge champions for the first time at the All Africa Mixed Team Championships 2017 on Wednesday at Benoni, South Africa.
Egypt’s continental championships victory was secured when Doha Hany and Hadia Hosny edged past Michelle Butler-Emmett/Jennifer Fry 21-19 17-21 21-19 in the Women’s Doubles.
South Africa had a strong start when they won the opening Mixed Doubles through Andries Malan/Jennifer Fry over Ahmed Salah/Menna Eltanany, 21-14 17-21 21-11.
However, Hadia Hosny brought Egypt back into the tie, winning her Women’s Singles over Sandra Le Grange, 21-8 21-17, before Abdelrahman Abdelhakim gave Egypt the lead by winning his Men’s Singles. Abdelhakim beat Cameron Coetzer 12-21 21-13 21-18.
Doha Hany and Hadia Hosny clinched the issue for Egypt by winning the Women’s Doubles to make it 3-1 for their country.
Earlier, in the semi-finals, Egypt held off Nigeria 3-2, while South Africa blanked Zambia 3-0.
