Line Kjaersfeldt stayed firm in the face of determined resistance from Neslihan Yigit to book her third round place at the 2017 European Championships in Kolding yesterday.
The home favourite recovered from a first-game loss and had leads of 17-15 and 20-18 in the final game, only to see her Turkish opponent claw back level. The Dane however grabbed the last two points to claim victory at 10-21 21-13 22-20 and will next face France’s Delphine Lansac, who beat Belgium’s Lianne Tan 21-12 13-21 21-13.
In Men’s Singles, home hope Anders Antonsen overcame Ireland’s Scott Evans 21-11 21-13 to earn a third round place against Finland’s Eetu Heino. Three other Danes also made the third round, including top seed Viktor Axelsen, Emil Holst and Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus.
In Men’s Doubles, Croatia’s Croatia’s Zvonimir Durkinjak/Zvonimir Hoelbling beat Ireland’s Sam Magee/Joshua Magee 21-14 21-19 in the opening round; they next face Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov.
Poland’s Milosz Bochat/Adam Cwalina had it easy against Switzerland’s Pierrick Deschenaux/Oliver Schaller 21-9 21-11 and take on top seeds Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen (Denmark) in the second round.
Women’s Doubles saw a number of close opening round matches. England’s Lauren Smith/Sarah Walker prevailed over France’s Emilie Lefel/Anne Tran 22-24 21-19 21-18, while Dutch pair Cheryl Seinen/Iris Tabeling (featured image) had it even closer against Sweden’s Clara Nistad/Emma Wengberg 17-21 21-14 23-21.
Italy’s Silvia Garino/Lisa Iversen also won a tight match, against Hungary’s Agnes Korosi/Orsolya Varga 21-16 12-21 22-20.
