France’s Ronan Labar and Audrey Fontaine got the better of No.7 seeds Vitalij Durkin/Nina Vislova to enter the quarter-finals of the 2017 European Championships in Kolding yesterday.
The French Mixed Doubles duo (featured image) stormed past the Russians 21-13 21-13 to earn their last-eight place against Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen/Sara Thygesen.
Ireland’s Sam Magee/Chloe Magee fought off a first-game deficit to overcome France’s Bastian Kersaudy/Lea Palermo 19-21 21-16 21-15 and will take on Polish veterans Robert Mateusiak/Nadiezda Zieba in the quarter-finals.
In Women’s Singles, Russia’s Evgeniya Kosetskaya upset third seed Linda Zetchiri (Bulgaria) 21-15 15-21 21-18. She takes on Denmark’s Metter Poulsen, who also prevailed in a three-game battle. Poulsen fought past Germany’s Luise Heim 21-15 15-21 21-15.
Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour edged past Germany’s Fabienne Deprez 21-11 19-21 21-18.
In Men’s Singles, top seed Viktor Axelsen eased into the quarter-finals beating Russia’s Vladimir Malkov 21-9 21-9. His quarter-final opponent will be Netherlands’s Mark Caljouw, who fought his way past Spain’s Pablo Abian 21-19 19-21 21-18.
No.8 seed Fabian Roth (Germany), Rajiv Ouseph (England), Brice Leverdez (France) and Anders Antonsen (Denmark) were among others who made it to the last eight.
Two Bulgarian pairs – Mariya Mitsova/Petya Nedelcheva and Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva – booked their place in the Women’s Doubles quarter-finals. Mitsova/Nedelcheva take on top seeds Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl (Denmark) while the Stoeva sisters face Julie Finne-Ipsen/Rikke Soby, also of Denmark.
Olympic Men’s Doubles bronze medallists Chris Langridge/Marcus Ellis were tested by Dutch pair Jelle Maas/Robin Tabeling in a 65-minute match, but the England pair came through 10-21 22-20 21-17. Up next are second seeds Mads Pieler Kolding/Mads Conrad Petersen of Denmark.
