New Zealand’s Abhinav Manota and Australia’s Wendy Chen won the singles titles at the Victor Oceania Championships 2018 that concluded in Hamilton yesterday.
Manota took just 35 minutes to claim the Men’s Singles crown over Tahiti’s Remi Rossi, 21-12 21-14.
The unseeded Manota had upset second seed Pit Seng Low (Australia) in the round of 16 before making his way past Kai Chen Teoh (Australia) in the quarter-finals and compatriot Oscar Guo in the semi-finals. In the other semi-final, Rossi got the better of Australia’s Peter Yan 21-6 17-21 21-12.
Wendy Chen (featured image) needed just 30 minutes to claim the Women’s Singles title, beating compatriot Louisa Ma 21-7 21-14. Chen and Ma entered the final without dropping a game. While Chen received a walkover from third seed Joy Lai in the semi-finals, Louisa Ma beat Zecily Fung 21-18 21-12.
The three doubles were all-Australia affairs and ended with Sawan Serasinghe and Setyana Mapasa winning two doubles titles each. The top seeds held off compatriots Matthew Chau/Leanne Choo 21-19 21-18 in the Mixed Doubles final. Mapasa and Gronya Somerville then prevailed over Renuga Veeran/Leanne Choo 21-14 22-20, before Serasinghe and Matthew Chau won the Men’s Doubles beating Robin Middleton/Ross Smith 21-17 23-21 in the Men’s Doubles final.
