Uganda’s Edwin Ekiring entered the second round of Men’s Singles at the XXI Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast yesterday, beating Cameron Coetzer of South Africa 21-10 21-14.
He was joined in the second round by compatriot Brian Kasirye, who beat Douglas Clark of Falkland Islands 21-14 21-7.
However, Ekiring and Shamim Bangi were less fortunate in their Mixed Doubles opening round, as they crashed out to Sachin Dias and Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa of Sri Lanka, 21-17 21-9.
Guyana’s Narayan Ramdhani had a comfortable win in Men’s Singles over St. Helena’s Vernon Smeed, 21-6 21-8.
Men’s Doubles saw two relatively new combinations: Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Soon Huat, and England’s Ben Lane and Chris Adcock. Both pairs made it easily into the second round.
While Chan and Goh outclassed Trinidad & Tobago’s Nicholas Bonkowsky/Naim Mohammed 21-4 21-6, Lane and Adcock had a slightly stiffer test against Australia’s Robin Middleton/Ross Smith, 21-10 21-18.
In Women’s Singles, Isle of Man’s Kimberley Clague enjoyed a straight-games win over Zambia’s Everlyn Siamupangila, 21-11 21-9.
Other winners included Ghana’s Grace Atipaka, Seychelles’ Allisen Camille, Australia’s Wendy Chen, Mauritius’ Nicki Chan-Lam and Pakistan’s Mahoor Shahzad.
In Mixed Doubles, Singapore’s Jason Wong and Ong Ren-Ne took just 22 minutes to get past Jersey’s Matthew Bignell and Emily Temple Redshaw.
