Singapore enjoyed a good day on the second day of the individual competition of the XXI Commonwealth Games yesterday as they won all their matches.
Ryan Ng and Loh Kean Yew (Men’s Singles); Grace Chua (Women’s Singles); Danny Bawa Chrisnanta/Terry Hee (Men’s Doubles); Ong Ren-Ne/Crystal Wong (Women’s Doubles) and Danny Bawa Chrisnanta/Crystal Wong; Jason Wong/Ong Ren-Ne; Tan Wei Han/Terry Hee (Mixed Doubles) all won their matches.
Ryan Ng beat Trinidad and Tobago’s Naim Mohammed in straight games, but compatriot Loh Kean Yew had a harder time getting past Scotland’s Kieran Merrilees, 21-12 18-21 21-18.
Among the close matches of the day was Ong Ren-Ne and Crystal Wong’s (featured image) three-game win over Australia’s Renuga Veeran/Leanne Choo, 22-20 16-21 21-18. The other Singaporean doubles pairs progressed in straight games.
Sri Lanka too had a positive day, winning most of their matches.
Brother Niluka Karunaratne and Dinuka Karunaratna won their Men’s Singles in straight games. While Niluka Karunaratne routed Liam Fong (Fiji) 21-5 21-6, Dinuka Karunaratna was just as comfortable against Northern Ireland’s Ciaran Chambers 21-7 21-8.
Buwaneka Goonethilleka joined his compatriots in the third round beating Ghana’s Emmanuel Donkor in straight games.
Sachin Dias won both his doubles – the Men’s Doubles with Goonethilleka over Zambia’s Kalombo Mulenga/Chongo Mulenga and the Mixed Doubles with Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa over Jersey’s Alexander Hutchings/Elise Dixon.
Hendahewa also won her Women’s Doubles with Kavidi Sirimannage over Pakistan’s Palwasha Bashir/Mahoor Shahzad.
The only Sri Lankan to lose on the day was Hasini Ambalangodage against Mauritius player Kate Foo Kune, 21-12 21-12.
Ambalandgade however won her Women’s Doubles in the company of Madushika Dilrukshi Beruwelage over Isle Of Man’s Kimberley Clague/Cristen Marritt 21-13 21-19.
In Men’s Singles, England’s Rajiv Ouseph got the better of Uganda’s Edwin Ekiring 21-8 21-12. Other contenders Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia), Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy (India) progressed easily.
In Men’s Doubles, Ghana’s Daniel Sam and Emmanuel Donkor earned a creditable victory over South Africa’s Cameron Coetzer and Prakash Vijayanath in the closes match of the tournament so far, 23-21 24-26 23-21.
