Mexico’s Women’s Singles players impressed on the opening day of the XXII Pan Am Individual Championships 2018 yesterday in Guatemala City.
Mariana Ugalde (featured image), Haramara Gaitan and Yaqueline Duarte posted straight-games victories to enter the second round. Ugalde beat El Salvador’s Urrutia Cecilia 21-8 21-6, while Gaitan cruised past Costa Rica’s Ana Laura Martinez Vega 21-11 21-9. Duarte was just as comfortable against El Salvador’s Fatima Beatriz 21-10 21-10.
All the seeds – Canada’s Michelle Li, Rachel Honderich and Brittney Tam; Peru’s Daniela Macias and USA’s Jamie Hsu – progressed without trouble.
In Men’s Singles, top seed Ygor Coelho (Brazil) entered round 3 with a 21-9 21-9 result over Guatemala’s Yeison Alvarez. Coelho faces fellow-Brazilian Fabricio Farias, who beat Chile’s Ivan Leon.
Second seed Kevin Cordon (Guatemala), third seed Jason Anthony Ho-Shue (Canada) and fourth seed Osleni Guerrero (Cuba) faced little trouble on their way to the third round.
Guerrero also advanced in the Men’s Doubles with Leodannis Martinez Palacio. The Cubans held off Mexico’s Lopez Andres and Luis Armando Navarro 21-16 21-19 to enter the second round.
They were joined by Canada’s Jonathan Bing and Alexander Ty Lindeman who made it past Brazil’s Mateus Carrijo Cutti/Rodolfo Augusto Salles, 21-19 21-16. All other pairs received a bye into the second round.
In Mixed Doubles, third seeds Matthew Fogarty and Isabel Zhong (USA) were upset by compatriots Ryan Chew and Sydney Lee in a thrilling finish, 12-21 21-9 21-19. The USA pair take on Chile’s Ivan Leon/Skaric Mickaela, who too enjoyed a narrow win in their second round.
Seventh seeds Solis Jonathan and Diana Corieto Soto survived in a close finish over Canada’s Nicolas Nguyen/Alexandra Mocanu, 14-21 21-19 23-21.
