Jason Anthony Ho-Shue and Rachel Honderich showcased their all-round skills at the XXII Pan Am Individual Championships 2018 yesterday, getting into the title rounds of singles and doubles.
Semi-finals day was dominated by Canada, who assured themselves of three gold medals and staying in contention of all five.
Canada’s Ho-Shue (featured image) beat second seed Kevin Cordon (Guatemala) 21-14 21-17 in the Men’s Singles semi-finals and then teamed up with Nyl Yakura and enjoyed a lop-sided result over Solis Jonathan/Rodolfo Ramirez (Guatemala), 21-12 21-11, in the Men’s Doubles semi-finals.
In the Men’s Singles final, Ho-Shue faces top seed Ygor Coelho (Brazil), who needed just 28 minutes to get past Cuba’s Osleni Guerrero, 21-17 21-7.
USA’s Phillip Chew/Ryan Chew made the Men’s Doubles final overcoming stiff resistance from Mexico’s Job Castillo/Lino Munoz in the opening game, 24-22 21-10.
Honderich also made two finals – in the Women’s Singles, she beat Mexico’s Haramara Gaitan 21-7 21-10 and then partnered Kristen Tsai to make the Women’s Doubles final in equally comfortable fashion, 21-10 21-12, over Peru’s Ines Castillo/Paula La Torre Regal.
Honderich takes on top seed Michelle Li (Canada) in the Women’s Singles final.
Apart from Ho-Shue and Honderich, Yakura and Kristen Tsai too have a shot at a double. The two Canadians made the Mixed Doubles final beating Mexico’s Andres Lopez/Cynthia Gonzalez 21-11 21-17. Their challenge in the final will come from compatriots Ty Alexander Lindeman/Josephine Wu, who beat Solis Jonathan/Diana Corleto Soto, 21-15 21-14.
