Canada Para: Fourth Title for Joshi

Manasi Girishchandra Joshi’s remarkable 2022 continued at the YONEX Canada Para Badminton International as she emerged triumphant in SL3 women’s singles.

It marked her fourth title of the year, having won the category at the two Spanish Para Badminton Internationals in March and the 4th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2022 last month.

In the first post-pandemic competition held in Ottawa, the 2019 world champion aced all four of her matches – against compatriot Parul Dalsukhbhai Parmar, Frenchwoman Coraline Bergeron, Ukrainian Oksana Kozyna and Japan’s Noriko Ito – to finish winner.

Joshi’s success was one of two gold medals won by India as Manisha Ramdass added to her recent SU5 women’s singles crown in Dubai by defeating Tokyo 2020 Paralympic bronze medallist Akiko Sugino 27-25 21-9 in the final.

Meanwhile, Peruvian Carmen Giuliana Poveda Flores topped the SH6 women’s singles to clinch her sixth title of 2022. Flores was unblemished en route to victory, defeating Cai Yi-lin and Yu Yen-wu from Chinese Taipei, Nina Kozlova (Ukraine) and Rachel Choong (England) in straight games.

The 20-year-old, also winner when the event was last contested in 2019, had earlier tasted glory in both singles and women’s and mixed doubles in Spain and Brazil.

Englishman Daniel Bethell bettered Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat – the man he lost to in Japan – for the second time this year, overcoming the Indian 21-14 9-21 21-15 to win the SL3 men’s singles title.
