The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is delighted that Para badminton is one of 22 sports included in the sports programme for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
Para badminton made a successful debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and will also appear at the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympics.
BWF President, Poul-Erik Høyer, said the announcement by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) was another positive milestone for Para badminton.
“Our acceptance into LA 2028 is fantastic news for our players and the wider badminton community because it means we will be part of the Paralympic Games cycle for another four years,” Høyer said.
“The decision provides us with great opportunity to build upon all the hard work that has been done previously for Tokyo 2020 and now Paris 2024 and will continue to create awareness for the sport and our development initiatives for the foreseeable future. We look forward to our Para badminton athletes showcasing the sport on the world’s biggest stage once again.”
BWF Vice President – Para Badminton, Paul Kurzo, said the sport’s inclusion at LA 2028 was a result of dedication by many parties.
“I am very proud that Para badminton is completely integrated with BWF and that our inclusion at LA 2028 is a culmination of our ‘one sport – one team’ approach, bringing the whole badminton family together,” he said.
“The BWF thanks the IPC for their deliberation and good cooperation, and we look forward to this relationship continuing to grow in the coming years.”
The qualifying period for the Paris 2024 Paralympics begins this February with the Spain Para Badminton International 2023. More details on Paris 2024 qualifying can be found here.
