Players from seven countries are all set to compete in the beautiful Caribbean island of Jamaica at the Pan Am qualification stage of the ANOC (Association of National Olympic Committees) World Beach Games.
To be held on 29 and 30 April 2023 at the GC Foster College of Physical Education & Sport in Jamaica’s capital Kingston, the event will provide the opportunity for players to qualify for the World Beach Games which will be held in Bali in August.
Among the competitors in Jamaica are Brazil’s Lima sisters – Jaqueline and Samia – who are No.46 in women’s doubles on the BWF World Rankings.
This is the first continental qualifier for the World Beach Games, where AirBadminton makes its debut; the other qualifiers are due to be held in Hammamet (Tunisia), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Werkendam (Netherlands) in June.
The participating countries in the Pan Am qualifier are Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, hosts Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. The Mixed Team Relay will be held on Saturday 29 April, while the Men’s Triples and Women’s Triples are scheduled for the next day. The winners of each Triples event will be invited to the World Beach Games.
In Saturday’s Mixed Team Relay starting 4pm local time, hosts Jamaica, Mexico and Dominican Republic face off in Group A, while Group B will feature Peru, Brazil and Venezuela. Canada are competing only in the Men’s Triples event.
The top two teams of each group make the semifinals, which are due to start 7pm local time.
The Mixed Team Relay is not a qualification event; its results will only determine seeding for the two Triples events the next day. The draw for the Triples will be conducted after the conclusion of the Mixed Team Relay competition. The schedule for Sunday’s Triples matches will be determined based on the competition experience of the previous day (wind speed, light, etc.).
