The stage is set for an epic showdown at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, as hosts China and Korea vie for the Women’s Team gold tomorrow a year after contesting the Uber Cup final.
Both triumphed in their semifinal clashes, with Team China showcasing its dominance with a 3-1 victory over Japan. In the crucial match, Zheng Yu/Zhang Shu Xian exhibited impeccable teamwork, defeating Yuki Fukushima/Naru Shinoya 21-19 21-13 to deliver the winning point after He Bing Jiao put China 2-1 ahead. Chen Yu Fei had won the first singles but Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida stunned world No.1s Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan 19-21 21-9 21-17 to level the tie.
On the other side of the draw, Korea displayed tenacity in a hard-fought win against Thailand.
Reigning world champion An Se Young set the tone with a thrilling 21-12 18-21 21-15 victory over Pornpawee Chochuwong, before Lee So Hee/Baek Ha Na and Kim So Yeong/Kong Hee Yong won their matches. Thailand’s solitary point came via Busanan Ongbamrungphan’s 24-22 14-21 21-13 win over Kim Ga Eun.
Meanwhile, the nailbiting showdown between India and Korea in the Men’s Team came down to the wire, Kidambi Srikanth emerging the hero for the Indians in the crucial fifth match. Kidambi defeated Cho Geonyeop 12-21 21-6 21-14 in an epic 79-minute battle – one of the longest of the day.
India will face China for gold, as the home favourites, buoyed by passionate fans, overcame Japan 3-1 in their semifinal encounter.
