Korea’s women’s squad delivered a remarkable performance in the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games final today, clinching gold by defeating host nation China 3-0.
This victory marked a historic moment for Korea, as it was their first Asian Games Women’s Team gold in nearly three decades, their previous success coming in 1994.
World champion and world No.1 An Se Young set the tone by dominating Chen Yu Fei during a swift 21-12 21-13 victory. First doubles Lee So Hee/Baek Ha Na continued the momentum defeating four-time world champions Jia Yi Fan/Chen Qing Chen 21-18 21-14. The decisive moment came when Kim Ga Eun fought valiantly to secure a 23-21 21-17 triumph over He Bing Jiao to seal Korea only their second ever gold in the event.
In Men’s Team, China faced a tough challenge from India, ultimately triumphing 3-2.
Lakshya Sen opened the scoring for India by winning the first point, before Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy beat in-form pair Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang 21-15 21-18.
Li Shi Feng then stepped up for China, securing a crucial 24-22 21-19 victory over Kidambi Srikanth to keep the hosts in contention. The formidable duo of Liu Yu Chen/Ou Xuan Yi displayed their prowess to defeat Dhruv Kapila/Sai Pratheek Krishna Prasad, bringing China level at 2-2.
Finally, Weng Hong Yang emerged his team’s hero after a thrilling 60-minute battle against Mithun Manjunath, securing a 21-12 21-4 win to clinch the gold medal for China on home soil.
