The rapid growth of badminton in the Middle East will receive a further boost with the hosting of the Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 – the first international badminton event in the capital of the UAE.
The BWF Tour Super 100 event, to be held 17-22 October 2023 offers a prize purse of US$120,000, providing a huge attraction for players from around the world, and just as importantly, for the badminton community of the region.
The new Marina Hall, which is located in the scenic ADNEC Marina, offers a fantastic location for the competition, which will host 232 players from 48 countries.
The Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 will also serve as platform for UAE’s top players and emerging Emirati talent.
With the tournament in the Olympic qualifying period, players who have a shot at Paris 2024 are expected to display their prowess. Around 166 matches across five categories will be played, and audiences can relish a week of high-quality badminton.
Among the stars entered to feature are Malaysia’s world No.26 men’s pair Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin and Finland’s Olympic hopeful Kalle Koljonen.
The hosting of the event is in line with the efforts of UAE Badminton Federation and BWF to build on the legacy of the Dubai World Superseries Finals, which were hosted from 2014 to 2017. The season-ending event had raised the profile of badminton in the region and proved to be a morale-booster for aspiring players.
Its long-term impact was seen at the recent BWF World Junior Championships 2023 in Spokane, when UAE players performed creditably against opponents from stronger badminton nations.
Besides the on-court action, the Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 has an inclusive community activation area, ensuring that enthusiasts of all levels of ability can take part in this celebration.
The Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 is being organised under the patronage of Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and the UAE Badminton Federation in partnership with Abu Dhabi Sports Council and 316 sports services.
