Uganda have their first African Games gold medal in badminton thanks to women’s pair Husina Kobugabe/Gladys Mbabazi.
The All-Africa Championships silver medallists etched their names into the history books on Sunday after defeating Algerians Halla Bouksani/Tanina Violette Mammeri 23-21 21-14 in Accra, Ghana.
Kobugabe also contributed a silver in women’s singles following her 21-16 17-21 19-21 final loss to Johanita Scholtz of South Africa.
Algeria did not leave emptyhanded as Koceila Mammeri/Youcef Sabri Medel and the Mammeri siblings – African champions in both – won the men’s and mixed doubles.
Nigeria had confirmed men’s singles gold after Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori and compatriot Godwin Olofua had set up their same-nation final earlier in the day. Three-time defending African champion Opeyori came through a closely-fought contest 21-23 21-17 21-15.
Badminton has been part of the African Games since 2003 in Abuja, Nigeria.
